As a testament to my leadership potential and commitment to diversity in the industry, I was honored to be tapped for the prestigious VANGUARD Program in 2020 to 2021. This recognition came as a significant milestone in my career, affirming my dedication to driving positive change in our field.
The VANGUARD Program, designed to foster diverse and inclusive leadership in the industry, offered me a transformative nine-month journey. As a Fellow, I was immersed in a comprehensive curriculum that addressed professional, organizational, cultural, and personal aspects of leadership development.
Throughout the program, I engaged in various enriching experiences:
1. Fellowship: I connected with a cohort of like-minded professionals, building a strong network of future industry leaders.
2. Sponsorship: I was paired with influential sponsors who provided guidance and advocated for my career advancement.
3. Coaching: I received personalized coaching to enhance my leadership skills and overcome professional challenges.
4. Mentorship: I was fortunate to be mentored by Karen Hunt, a respected UM Mentor, who offered invaluable insights and support.
5. Organizational Learning: I gained a deeper understanding of systemic issues and strategies to promote inclusivity in the workplace.
A key focus of the program was exploring what it means to be a transformative Black leader. Through historical context and practical application, I developed skills to actualize Black leadership in my everyday work. This aspect of the program was particularly impactful, allowing me to reflect on my role in shaping the future of our industry.
The VANGUARD experience went beyond individual growth, emphasizing collective advancement. I worked alongside fellow participants, sponsors, and mentors to address the needs of Black employees and leaders in our field. This collaborative approach reinforced the program’s commitment to creating lasting change in the industry.
Being named a 2021 Vanguard Fellow has been a pivotal moment in my career. It has equipped me with the tools, network, and perspective to not only advance my own leadership journey but also to contribute meaningfully to the cultivation of a more diverse and inclusive industry landscape.
